My first thought when I glimpsed the beginning Givenchy model as she strode onto the runway with her hair slicked into kiss-curls around her temples, and braided into rows at the back, along with her pronounced septum rings and striking face full of glued-on gems (besides, does that hurt) was that this was a whole other level of cool. “Chola Victorian,” he declared backstage. “She’s the boss of the gang.” This sublime Ricardo Tisci collection not only ruled Paris fashion week, but of fashion month in its totality.
While the striking face jewelry formed the”chola” section of this story, the Victorian came by way of the exquisite clothing. Velvet dévoré tops and dresses, rich black tail coats, peacock feather-printed silk dress gowns, rouched sleeving and peplum waists high lighted Tisci’s remarkable and indisputable tailoring skills. Givenchy may no longer play in the couture world, but Ricardo’s final exits of ornately embroidered jet bead pieces – a strapless bustier dress over slimline cropped ankle trousers (one of my most beloved looks), bias-cut net gowns, and a pair of tailcoats with wide, short sleeves — were surly crafted from a hand gifted with extreme couturier talents. They were remarkable, as was this, one of Tisci’s best collections!
As women’s fashion month is put to bed, I’ve selected a few of my favorite looks from Paris fashion week to high light.
